~ What are we gifting our moms this Mother’s Day? Books, of course!~ Even though university is out, in Read This, Then That we’re looking to two novels set in school: Maureen Medved’s Black Star (Anvil Press) and Suzette Mayr’s Dr. Edith Vane and the Hares of Crawley Hall (Coach House Books).~ We read about inherited trauma and family history in Claire Sicherman’sImprint (Caitlin Press): “Growing up, I wasn’t told stories about my family, and the stories they held were kept silent. My grandparents did not talk about the horrors. Instead their trauma was passed down to my mother, and then it made a warm and comfortable home in my body. I grew up with a heaviness that I couldn’t name.”~ For Short Story Month, Downward This Dog (Mawenzi House), which he describes as “Boot the dentist. Food porn. White powder in mail. Earth mama yoga teacher. Fake postcards. Prized lottery ticket. Extremist. Graduate student journal.”~ We joined forces with Freehand Books Publisher Kelsey Attard and had a bit of fun playing casting director for The Figgs.
