Established in 2006, BookLand Press focuses on literary excellence and the great values and diversity of Canada. Fresh, insightful, diverse, multicultural, Canadian — these are some of the words that describe the variety of books that BookLand Press publishes. For BookLand, books can be one of the most effective ways of sharing important topics for people of different languages and backgrounds. To that end one of the mainstays of its publishing program has been its translation series, ensuring that culturally significant Canadian titles are available to all readers throughout the country. They translate award-winning poetry from French to English, such as 2014 Trillium Award-winner (in French) Dreaming Reality by Daniel Groleau Landry (translated by Howard Scott), in addition to translating select titles from their poetry series “Canadian Aboriginal Voices” into various Aboriginal languages, including Bi-gishkoziitwin Biidaanzhed Biidaabang by David Groulx (translated by Shirley Ida Williams) from English to Ojibwa.
Translation work isn’t the only thing they do at BookLand. They also publish fiction and creative non-fiction that is different, exciting, and awakens readers to angles of the world they may not have noticed before. For example, many people may be unaware of the aviation history of Canada and the important role we played in air training efforts of WWI; Peter C. Conrad shares this exciting history in Training Aces: Canada’s Air Training During the First World War, just released from BookLand this fall. They’ve also published young adult fiction titles that deal with important issues, such as racism, bullying, and adoption, most recently with the publication of The Blue Knight by Raymond McGregor. In a fantastical tale of teenager Owen, the reader learns about unlikely friendships and strategies for dealing with some of life’s hardships productively and positively.Spend some time getting to know more BookLand Press titles on All Lit Up!
