Do-Lit-Yourself is a column for book lovers with a crafty streak. This pinteresting monthly is penned by LPG Education and Engagement manager Lauren Perruzza. With school started or starting for many, lunches will again become front-of-mind for many a plagued parent. Why not turn to your kids’ books for inspiration? With new instalments releasing in three of our fave middle-grade and YA series this fall, we’ve envisioned the go-to lunchtime eats for their heroes and heroines.Earth-Friendly Eats
Twelve-year-old Hannah, the heroine of Carol Anne Shaw’s Hannah Trilogy, is deeply connected to nature. From travelling back in time to live with Coast Salish People in then-Tl’ulpalus, to fighting poachers in the Cowichan Bay, the environment is of paramount importance to this tenacious girl. If you’ve got your own green-minded youngster, make up a batch of chickpea “tuna” salad – we guarantee that no fish were harmed in the making of this sandwich – and check out Hannah’s latest adventure, Hannah and the Wild Woods (Ronsdale Press), when it releases at the end of September.Creepy Crudités
October Schwartz from The Dead Kid Detective Agency Series is thirteen, and she dodges both the daily horrors of middle school and the horrors daily pursuing her and her five dead friends from the Sticksville cemetery. Between homicidal math teachers and the sinking of the Titanic, their mysteries can be as unpredictable as teenage moods (millenials, amirite?). October goes against the grain, and we think she’d like a lunch that does the same: make meatloves in muffin liners with mashed potato “frosting” for savoury cupcakes, and serve an apricot halved over a scoop of vanilla yogurt for an “egg” dessert. Plus, “spooky” crudités, because vegetables. October’s latest adventure, Loyalist to a Fault (ECW Press), is available now.  BONUS: DKDA series author Evan Munday wrote about embarrassing things that happened to him during school earlier this week, but none of them involved food – which is miraculous to this ALU author, because I think all of mine did.Legendary Lunch
Ariane and Wally, from Edward Willett’s Shards of Excalibur Series, have an Arthurian task in the present day: to recover the shards of the legendary sword before Rex Major (internet mogul and mythic wizard Merlin) does. A descendant of the Lady of the Lake herself, Ariane has the tenacity to do it: but will the shards, and Wally, work with her or against her in their difficult quest? For Ariane a “water”cress pesto pasta salad tossed with healthy veggies and protein (like chicken or tempeh) would be her best bet! The latest book in the series, The Cave Beneath the Sea (Coteau Books), will be available this November.
