Awoowaakii

Winner of the 2025 Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play

Chrissy Two Guns, a strong Blackfoot trans woman, runs a strict household, juggling work, school, and raising her adopted son, Richie, with her best friend, Uncle Toni. While Chrissy is intent on protecting sixteen-year-old Richie, Toni thinks it’s high time they stopped hiding things in the closet, like Toni’s fierce drag persona, Lady Nahaa. But when Chrissy’s estranged father unexpectedly arrives on their doorstep and mistakes Toni for his long-lost son “Christian,” a chaotic farce ensues, threatening to tear their chosen family apart.

A hilarious and healing tale of truth and reconciliation within an Indigenous family, this sparkling debut by Sable Sweetgrass honours the reverence that trans people have long held in traditional Blackfoot society and many Indigenous communities. Adorned with dance, drag, wisdom, and ceremony, from now on you’ll remember the name Awoowaakii.

Reviews

Awoowaakii has accomplished something significant. It has told a specific story that feels universal. The play reminds us that families—biological or chosen—are complicated, messy and essential.”

“Sweetgrass lets us laugh, then she makes us think and talk once we leave the theatre.”
