~ We sat down with Indigenous author Jules Koostachin of Unearthing Secrets, Gathering Truths (Kegedonce Press) about a formative moment in junior high, safety in writing, and more: “I realized the power of words that day, and that I had a gift to create change/action by shedding light on what mattered to me.”~ We interviewed author and illustrator team Jaime Lee Mann and Sarah Marie Lacey of the YA series The Legend of Rhyme (Blue Moon Publishers) about their process and illustrations in fantasy fiction: “I think illustrations add an extra dimension to the books, helping to flesh out an imaginary world and make it come to life for the person reading it.”~ Publisher Anvil Press shared the visceral, puzzle-like poetry of Slinky Naive with us: “Lose your place and find another in the codex of this strange and unguent poetry, an unusual salve for the busy mind.”~ Chem prof and science personality Dr. Joe Schwarcz dissected some pop science curiosities from his new book A Feast of Science (ECW Press) in this edition of Under the Cover.~ We shared four debut books from some authors we’re excited about this year.

Around the Web

~ Poetry sales in Canada have risen over the last few years, but our neighbours to the south are also reaching for the poetry, according to this study.~ “Dank” might graduate from the Urban Dictionary to the Oxford English Dictionary as the OED appeals to teens to explain their use of slang terms.

~ Canadians are finally back on the Man Booker list now that author Esi Edugyan was shortlisted for the 2018 prize.

What Else We’re Reading

With the announcement of the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist, we’re collectively reading and (re)reading three faves from the list: Eric Dupont’s Songs for the Cold of Heart (Baraka Books), Paige Cooper’s Zolitude (Biblioasis), and Joshua Whitehead’s Jonny Appleseed (Arsenal Pulp Press).
