In Review: The Week of October 30th

On the Blog

~ David Huebert shares memories of his childhood in Halifax, the setting in his debut short story collection Peninsula Sinking (Biblioasis): “Missing the Atlantic ocean—pining for the sound and smell of it, longing for its great pulsing shadow—has made me a different writer of the ocean than I would have been if I’d stayed beside it.”~ Jon R. Flieger tells us about the time he visited a funeral home, then “came home and wrote a piece called ‘Transfer’ which would eventually become the first section of You are Among Monsters.”~ Designer Michel Vrana was given a manuscript to Peter Darbyshire’s Has the World Ended Yet? with art directions to design a cover “influenced by Weird Tales and having that fun, pulp feel.” Read his process in designing the final cover.~ Poet Beth Goobie speaks to trauma and recovery in this edition of Poetry in Motion: “We will remember. We will recover. & we will speak out.” breathing at dusk from Coteau Books. ~ We think John Mavin’s debut short story collection Rage (Thistledown Press) is, well, all the rage. Others agree: “Mavin’s stories yank us into the sound bytes of the day-to-day digital narrative we collectively skim. Deftly turning them inside out, he lingers there—draws us into their pathos, their aching beauty.” – Author Betsy Warland

Around the Web

~ This dog shelter sorted its pets into Hogwarts Houses to encourage adoption and we’ll take them all (if we could).~ The Governor General’s Literary Awards winners included Richard Harrison’s On Not Losing My Father’s Ashes in the Flood (Poetry); Hiro Kanagawa’s Indian Arm (Drama); and Oana Avasilichioaei’s English translation of Bertrand Laverdure’s Readopolis (Translation). ~ To keep the spirit of Halloween alive for just a little longer, here’s a list of spooky podcasts to listen to on your commute.

What Else We’re Reading

Jocelyn Parr’s Governor General’s Literary Award-nominated novel Uncertain Weights and Measures has been in our TBR pile and is our staff pick this week.
