When most people think of the Niagara Region, their minds jump to waterfalls, wineries, green spaces, and world-class entertainment. But if you know where to look, the region has even more to offer, especially for readers who love independent bookstores that embody the community, culture, and charm of the cities they’re in.

If you’re planning a day trip, these spots are must-sees for anyone who loves books, coffee, and a good wander!

First Stop: Downtown St. Catharines

Our journey begins in downtown St. Catharines, a vibrant core filled with eclectic shops, arts spaces, and trend-setting restaurants. This growing cultural hub is home to one of the region’s most eclectic indie bookstores.

Step into Someday Books, a bright, minimalist space dedicated to popular fiction and nonfiction, Canadian literature, and indie press gems. Meticulously curated for readers of literary fiction, the shelves also hold local authors, award-winning novels, and staple bestsellers that are destined to become your next great read.

It’s a calm, inviting shop designed for book lovers—the kind of place where you can lose track of time exploring each and every cover. Whether you’re after the latest prizewinner, a local Niagara voice, or just the comfort of browsing in a space where books take centre stage, this stop sets the tone for a day of discovery.

Next Stop: Port Dalhousie

From St. Catharines, our field trip leads you just a few minutes north to Port Dalhousie, a charming waterfront community on the shores of Lake Ontario. Known primarily as the host of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, Port Dalhousie, like many charming Niagara towns, is a place where history and leisure meet. It’s also where you’ll find Thistle Bookshop & Café, our next cozy independent bookstore brimming with charm.

Inside, floor-to-ceiling shelves are packed with everything from the latest summer romances to trending bestsellers. Thistle’s large children and YA sections makes it a family-friendly stop, and their coffee and treats are a perfect mid-trip refresh, so grab a snack, relax, and enjoy browsing a curated collection of soon-to-be favourite reads.

Enjoy Your Day in Niagara!

A Niagara field trip is never complete without soaking in the region’s natural beauty with a lakeside stroll, hiking along the escarpment, or enjoying boutique dining after a day of exploring. Adding a bookstore stop (or two) gives your visit an extra bookish touch and supports the indie businesses that make the region so unique.

So next time you head to Niagara, look beyond the Falls. Wander the streets, browse curated shelves, sip the perfect coffee, and take home a story (or three).
