Watch This, Read That: Summer Edition
While summer might be coming to an end, we’ve still got some time left before we watch the credits roll! We’ve put together a few book recommendations to check out before/after watching some of the season’s hottest flicks.Â
Midsommar / Mooncalves (Now or Never Publishing) by Victoria HetheringtonIf you’ve gotten up the nerve to go watch Midsommar, we applaud you. If you haven’t gotten past the trailer…we understand. Either way, if you’re intrigued by movies about dark and dangerous cults, check out Victoria Hetherington’s Mooncalves. Set in rural Québec, the story follows a luddite cult and one woman’s struggle to escape it alive.
The Goldfinch / Butterfly (Linda Leith Publishing) by John DelacourtThat’s right, Donna Tartt’s award winning book is coming to the big screen, featuring Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Theo. If you’re anxiously awaiting the film’s September release like we are, try John Delacourt’s Butterfly. Filled with action, this book will keep you on a familiar path within the global arts scene, following Toronto model Nataa who disappears after a video secretly filmed in Bosnia comes to light.
Downton Abbey / Almost True (Inanna Publications) by Jan RehnerIf you loved the characters of Downton Abbey, (soon to be in theatres as a full length film!), we think you’ll love the women of Jan Rehner’s Almost True (Inanna Publications). Set in Burgundy during World War II, the story highlights the bond of friendship between four very different women after one of their brothers, Gaston, goes missing. While rumours fly throughout the village, the women are left to confront their assumptions about Gaston’s whereabouts and are brought closer to each other by the truth.* * *
