In Review: The Week of September 5th

While all the back-to-school photos that flooded Facebook this week made it feel like fall, the 40+ degree weather at ALU HQ did not. We hope your first week back after our last summer long weekend didn’t feel quite as long as it did to us but if it did, we’ve rounded up some fun lit news and recommendations to cheer you up and slow you down for a minute.

Get Crafty~ We got slightly sentimental in this month’s Do-Lit-Yourself column: we created a frame-worthy sonnet sampler using lyrics from a Tragically Hip song.Behind-the-scenes~ NeWest Press interviewed one of their book designers for this month’s Beautiful Books column: Kate Hargreaves talks about making her cat famous, and the difference between designing for fiction vs non-fiction.~ Author Hal Niedzviecki is bringing the tradition of the serialized novel back with his latest book: he takes us In House to share how this marketing project had an effect on how his story evolved.

~ The Toronto International Film Festival has started and the race to Oscar has begun. The CBC collected 8 literary movies playing at TIFF for those book lovers who are also film buffs, including a documentary about Jane Jacobs.~ If you’ve never listened to an episode of the podcast Criminal start with this one: “The Editor” is about a prisoner who became such a voracious reader behind bars that he found several errors in Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Encyclopedia.~ We stumbled upon the Instagram account for Girls At Library this week and we’re enchanted by all the lovely bookish images. Their website features book recommendations and writer interviews by a diverse collection of women who all share a passion for reading. Awesome.
