In Review: The Week of November 7th

~ Leonard Cohen has passed away at 82. To Canada’s “poet laureate of loneliness,” we all feel a little lonelier without you.~ LitHub rounded up literary voices reacting to Trump, and they’re all more articulate than our !@##$$%^$#@?!?!?!?~ In some lovelier news, the Italian government has pledged 500 euros to every Italian turning eighteen, so that they can buy books.

What Else We’re Reading

What is a Feminist Killjoy? In Erin Wunker’s introduction to her new book, Notes from a Feminist Killjoy (BookThug), she attributes the term to Sara Ahmed and calls the FK “that irreverent figure who lights a match and joyfully flicks it into the dry hull of patriarchal culture.” With everything that’s happened, you bet your bottom dollar we’re on board.

On the Blog

~ The Giller Prize was awarded Monday, and we had a hangover that just kept going after the actually terrible U.S. Election Results came in. The (small bit of) good news is that this list is a salve for everything Trump isn’t.~ Our friend Leigh at Invisible Books brought us a perfect followup to last year’s Canada Reads finalist, And the Birds Rained Down.~ The only words we really had for the things that happened this week were found on our type-only cover collage.~ You can still get a free reading light (with purchase of a book) if you sign up for our newsletter, but only until this coming Monday.
