Do-Lit-Yourself: Save Our Spines!

Our Do-Lit-Yourself column has been around almost as long as All Lit Up has, and one thing (pretty much the only thing) we’re terribly strict about is crafts that don’t involve cutting a book to smithereens for a new Pinterest-y door wreath or whatever. BUT – Google “book crafts” and that’s pretty much all you’re going to see. We’ve rounded up some offenders and implore you to think of your books and SOS (“Save our spines!”) when embarking on your own literary crafting journeys.*

Stand defensively in front of your bookcase and check out these five Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque* book crafts.

These wedding paper cones are the craft equivalent of stuffing a pork roulade with bacon bits: this savvy crafter has made an adorable-yet-total PAGEBATH of bookpage cones filled to the brim with bookpage confetti.
As you may have guessed, ALU staff frequently have books in our bags! Here’s the opposite: a book turned into a purse, ironically with no space for a book (maybe a Kobo, though).

All of these book crafts might bring us to tears, at least there’s these tissues…wait…:’( *Of course, we’re kidding. All of these are super-nice looking, and made from very old books that no one is likely to read. So maybe, if you have an old book kicking around that you’ll never read, giving it some love this way (or supporting these Etsy stores where listed) isn’t the worst? “Who are we to judge,” says All Lit Up, fanning themselves with folded pages of the Gutenberg Bible, “who are we to judge.” * * *For literary crafts that don’t chop your reads, browse our DLY archive here.
