I scream, you scream, we all scream for…paletas! Better known as popsicles here up north, paletas are the perfect thing to beat the heat. On today’s Do-Lit-Yourself, we’re serving PaLITas: popsicle recipes that hearken back to some of our favourite summer reads. (P.S. If you think popsicles are for babies, these can all contain booze if you want them to.)

Do-Lit-Yourself is a column for book lovers with a crafty streak. This pinteresting monthly is written by LPG Education and Engagement manager Lauren Perruzza.Before we get to our recipes, you’ll need access to a freezer and a popsicle mould to make your icy treats. We like this one from Norpro), but are partial to the DIY feel of a Dixie cup pop, too.Our first pick nods to the Mexican origins of the Paleta name: these apricot rice pudding (a.k.a Arroz con leche) pops from Bon Appétit pair perfectly with the eight plays by established and up-and-coming Latinx playwrights from Fronteras Vivientes(Playwrights Canada Press, edited by Natalie Alvarez). All of these plays reflect a tendency to play with (if not overtly flout) form, excise historical and present-day oppression in everyday life, and charge it all with a little dark humour.
Popsicle photo by Ditte Isager/Bon Appétit.Paleta #2 is such a brilliant red – these delicious and tequila-friendly strawberry, lime, and black pepper popsicles from Smitten Kitchen – that we can’t help but pair them with the reddest book around: that’s Kubrick Red, the memoir/The Shining tribute from Simon Roy (Anvil Press, translated by Jacob Homel). Stemming from the author’s first experience watching The Shining on television, he compellingly details the grip that this horror film has had on his life since.

We suggest snacking on these while reading gorgeous The Swallows Uncaged by Elizabeth McLean (Freehand Books) a book imagining the lives of Vietnamese women of all ages, at all parts of Vietnamese history. Having spent six years teaching in the country, McLean immersed herself in the cultures and traditions of Vietnam, and has united them in eight separate-but-interrelated narratives. Make sure you consume well before bedtime (but we urge you to keep reading right until it).
