Do-Lit-Yourself: Literary #notd Giller Edition, 2018

Painting our nails after the Giller shortlist has become an annual ALU tradition where we celebrate the nominees (while saving on manicures—a win win!). And this year’s list is no less polish-worthy: we’re stoked for all the nominees, but especially for indie favourite Song for the Cold of Heart. (Straws may have been drawn over who got to do that one).

Do-Lit-Yourself is a column for book lovers with a crafty streak. First up, a funky and fun interpretation of the striking cover design of Eric Dupont’s Songs for the Cold of Heart (Baraka Books).
Sheila Heit’s Motherhood is a great cover to use for nail-art-inspiration on the go. It’s simple and fun! (Tip: to get the droplet effect, you can use the circular eraser on a pencil to dab polish on your nails in a pinch).
Get ready for this jelly! Octopuses, like birds, aren’t exactly a swim to paint. But we managed to do a tentastic job to flatter nominee Esi Edugyan on her shortlisted novel Washington Black.
This cover of Thea Lim’s An Ocean of Minutes is the splash of calm (and colour!) we need before we get to celebrating at the Giller Light Bash!
And if we had more hands, we’d also have painted Patrick deWitt’s French Exit onto our digits, but maybe we’ll save that one for the after party. * * *We’ll be rocking our looks at the bash next week – maybe we’ll see some of yours? For more Do Lit Yourself, click here.
