Character Study: No Fury Like That
When Sales Manager and ALU Chappy Hour scribe Tan Light read Lisa de Nikolits’ latest novel, No Fury Like That (Inanna Publications), she was sure it’d be perfect for the silver screen. Tan’s kickstarted that process, providing a dream cast that fuelled a movie poster for this novel-turned-film about a group of women going through purgatory together. Hollywood, call us?
Lisa de Nikolits’ No Fury Like That (Inanna Publications) pairs the institutional setting and female “inmates” of Orange is the New Black with the luxury and fashion of Sex in the City, and the revenge arc of Kill Bill. Julia’s friendships in Limbo, her therapy with Cedar, and her eventual reckoning are filled with heart and humour. How could we not cast this title? The Setting: Purgatory / TorontoThe Period: Contemporary The Characters:Julia is a tall, beautiful, powerful executive, and the heroine of our story. Lisa’s mom thinks Charlize Theron would make the perfect Julia, and you just can’t argue with the author’s mom on such things. Agnes is a young Asian Goth who just happens to work in Limbo while she figures out how to move on. I think Lana Condor could pull off this moody but loveable young woman. (Fat) Tracey treats her fellow inmates to many baked cookies, and makes no excuses about her size. I think body-positive actress Sharron Matthews would bring energy and empathy to the role. Samia was a barista on earth, and continues to operate a small coffee klatch where the other women gather and get to know each other’s past. Alia Bhatt would be great in this role as sympathetic friend. Grace at one point compares herself to “Tiger Lady” – her plastic surgeon husband has practically destroyed her sense of self her while trying to make her “perfect”. Jennifer Coolidge is my pick for this tortured beauty. Isabelle is “birdlike”, “angelic”, and “ethereal as wild grass”. She’s also a sex addict who manages to fall in love in Limbo. Who else but Elle Fanning to play this waif-like creature? Cedar Mountain Eagle is Julia’s Helper/therapist. He’s a “hippie dude” who wears sandals and a sweater, and reminds me a whole lot of The Dude. I’d like to see an earthy crunch Owen Wilson in this role. Eno is a street tough with a heart of gold. Rising star (and indie author!) Joel Thomas Hynes has the gritty look to pull this character off. Jaimie is Eno’s pal, and a little bit of eye-candy for Julia – even if he doesn’t respond to her flirting! Canada’s Julian Kang has the classic GQ looks for this supporting role. Junior is Julia’s former boss and ginger flame. It’s possible he’s also responsible for her arrival in Purgatory. To balance out the amazing energy Charlize would bring to Julia’s character, I’d cast the impeccable Simon Pegg as Junior. * * *We took Tan’s descriptions and ran with this movie poster for the No Fury Like That adaptation.
