Chappy Hour: The Pussy Foot + The Chemical Life

Jim Johnstone’s latest collection, The Chemical Life (Vehicule Press), doesn’t so much tiptoe around as dive head-first into experiences of mental illness and addiction. We pair prohibition-era mocktail The Pussy Foot with Johnstone’s poem “As Conducted by Seiji Ozawa,” a nod to the poem’s Massey Hall setting and its 100-year-old alcohol ban.

You might just get a contact high reading Jim Johnstone’s latest, The Chemical Life (Vehicule Press) – a collection fuelled by, and grappling with, substance abuse. By request, we are pairing this month’s selection with a mocktail: the kind of drink you might have enjoyed at Massey Hall, the site of our feature poem, during the 100 years that alcohol was banned from the premises. The Pussy Foot is a classic prohibition drink, so packed with flavour that you won’t miss a thing.
