Kayla Geitzler’s That Light Feeling Under Your Feet (NeWest Press) is a collection about cruise ships, their passengers, and the folks who run them. A big fan of cruising myself, the poems in this collection took me back to distant ports of call, buffet lines, and rum drinks. Ready to come aboard?I’m whipping up a batch of Rum Swizzle, a bright, fruity cocktail that hails from a favourite cruise destination, Bermuda, for today’s Chappy Hour – but feel free to swap the rum for ginger ale if you don’t want that Light Feeling to go to your head.

The Cocktail

(Text instructions to follow)
Ingredients
  • 4oz. black rum;
  • 4oz. gold rum;
  • Juice of 2 lemons;
  • 5oz. pineapple juice;
  • 5oz orange juice;
  • 2oz. Bermuda falernum (or use Grenadine)
  • 6 dashes Angostura Bitters
Directions Mix all ingredients in pitcher with crushed ice, shake vigorously until a frothing head appears. Strain into cocktail glasses. Garnish with a slice of orange and a cherry.Serves 6, on the rocks over ice.

The Poem

Whether your cruise experience is wonderful or Supposedly Fun Thing-esque (as described in “Chunks Ahoy”), finish off that pitcher of rum- or ginger ale-cocktail with the longer excerpt of That Light Feeling Under Your Feet (clicking here begins a PDF download). * * *For more Chappy Hour, click here.
