This Is a Stickup

By (author): Amber McMillan

This Is a Stickup is a heart-stopping second collection of poetry from Amber McMillan. In fierce, lonely and elegant lines McMillan writes of violence, of the sea and of love. Fish and sparrows crowd in the edges of these poems where grandfathers are lost at sea and friends are lost along the way. A strange man peers in her window and flames consume swing sets, while McMillan unravels some of the deep griefs of the world, creating space for the reader to grieve alongside her. Intimate and powerful, these poems are unforgettable.

Reviews

We Can’t Ever Do This Again is deliberate and unwavering and is one that I’ve returned to for enjoyment, but also when wanting to think about thoughtfulness and precision in my own work. It’s a must-read.”

– CBC Books

“It’s about moving to Protection Island with her husband and small daughter. And it’s genius for a number of reasons. It starts in Toronto and does such a wonderful job of capturing the sort of big city stress that so many young families are now dealing with … and the dreaming of a simpler life.”

– CBC News

“If you are toying with the notion of island life, McMillan’s The Woods is necessary and honest research into the pros, cons and head-banging, eye-rolling panorama of life on a tiny island.”

– Vancouver Sun

The Running Trees is very modern, definitely unconventional and altogether distinctive… If you are a connoisseur of the short story and are looking for something very different, give this volume a try.”

– Oakville News

“This is such a masterful, tightly written short story collection, and unique in its voice and formatting. McMillan turns the mundane into wry, lovable tales, with images that stick with you long after you’ve finished the stories.”

– The Miramichi Reader
