No Ordinary Risks

Three thrilling journeys told in vivid detail by men who risked their lives to open up the North, in the days before the North was a part of Canada.

In his search for Sir John Franklin’s men, James Anderson travelled 600 miles down 84 sets of rapids in the treacherous Great Fish River on his way to the Arctic Sea.

Wrestling rapids in birchbark canoes waterproofed with tree resin and bear fat, Robert Campbell fought his way up BC’s tumultuous Liard River, and ventured across the mountains to the unknown Yukon.

Pompous, dislikeable Augustus Peers watched as each of his men carried 168-pound packs of trade goods into regions where all the rivers flowed Northward. He wrote about his experiences and his long-lost manuscript, unearthed by the author, reveals his evocative and expressive writing.

Nancy Marguerite Anderson expertly weaves the journals of these three remarkable Hudson’s Bay Company men into a gripping and powerful tale of daring and dangerous explorations.

AUTHOR

Nancy Marguerite Anderson

Nancy Marguerite Anderson fell into the stories of the pre-gold rush history of the territory west of the Rocky Mountains when she researched her great-grandfather’s writings. Her first book, The Pathfinder, told the story of Alexander Caulfield Anderson’s life in the Hudson’s Bay Company and of his experiences in the early colonial history of British Columbia. Many of these stories are told on Nancy’s blog. She makes her home in Victoria. Visit her at www.nancymargueriteanderson.com.

Reviews

Praise for Nancy Marguerite Anderson’s previous work:
“A fine book with crisp writing nicely balanced between the author’s voice and the journals of the HBC men.” – BC BookWorld
“A fascinating window into the lives of a distinct group of men who led daring, adventurous lives and who were the driving force behind one of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s least known yet most epic transportation ventures.” – Canada’s History
“The fascinating narrative is supported by excerpts from journals of six express leaders. I love reading these accounts of earlier travellers on the historic river.” – BC Review
“Therein lies both the charm and the value of this book, sympathetic story-telling grounded in primary documents, liberally quoted to keep the reader as close as possible to the words and experiences of those who worked and travelled the York Factory Express.” — BC Studies
