This beautiful, landmark volume traces the history of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s inspiring collection of drawings and watercolours — one of the fastest growing in North America since the founding of the Gallery’s Prints and Drawings Department in 1976.

The unconventional selection of one hundred works, ranging from the fifteenth to the mid-twentieth century, provides a fascinating chronicle of five centuries of drawing, with each full-page reproduction accompanied by insightful commentary from a scholar or curator. Included in this volume are works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, J.M.W. Turner, Picasso, Pollock, Paul Gauguin, and Käthe Kollwitz, as well as Emily Carr, Tom Thomson, and David Milne — several published here for the first time.

Katharine Lochnan

Katharine Lochnan is a senior curator emeritus at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a senior fellow at Massey College. Lochnan was the founding curator of the Prints and Drawings Department at the AGO and worked as the department’s curator for over 30 years. She has curated numerous exhibitions and authored numerous publications for the AGO, including Painting Toward the Light: The Watercolours of David Milne; Turner, Whistler, Monet: Impressionist Visions; Mystical Landscapes from Vincent Van Gogh to Emily Carr, and Black Ice: David Blackwood, Prints of Newfoundland.
