Harriet = = = Controlled Damage by Andrea Scott (J. Gordon Shillingford)

Premiering at TIFF in the “before-time,” 2019’s Harriet gave history lovers everywhere the long overdue big-screen telling of Harriet Tubman’s life and story. Played by Viola Davis, a slave named Minty makes her harrowing journey through the Underground Railroad and in her freedom becomes Harriet. After making her way to Canada, she dedicates herself to helping other slaves through the Underground into the country. History buffs on your list will appreciate traveling forward on the Black history timeline into the 19th century with the story of another strong woman icon for black rights—Viola Desmond in Andrea Scott’s Controlled Damage. This theatrical telling recounts the story of how a single act of bravery in a Nova Scotia theater in 1942 would bolster the fight for Black civil rights and social justice in Canada.

The Get Down = = = Memphis Mayhem by David A. Less (ECW Press)

From the director of the opulent Moulin Rouge and the Great Gatsby comes another feast for the eyes and ears: The Get Down follows a group of teens through the sparkling 1970s New York disco scene to the birth of hip-hop as we know it today. If your giftee loved this series and generally doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to tracing the roots of any musical genre, give them a history lesson with Memphis Mayhem which moves from the 1870s forward in recounting some of the major cultural moments that would lead to the musical revolution that gave the world blues legends from Booker T. to Otis Redding to Justin Timberlake.
