Call the Midwife = = =  Middenrammers by John Bart (Freehand Books)Period drama series Call the Midwife follows a group of newly practising midwives in late 1950s and early 1960s East London – where abortion was illegal and the National Health Service was still finding its feet – portraying a time when issues of incest and syphilis ran rampant, and contraceptive pills were only just being released. Fans of the show will find a lot of the same appeal in John Bart’s Middenrammers, a novel about a doctor and midwife team (who just might be falling in love) in a Yorkshire fishing town in the 1970s who staunchly refuse to accept hospital laws against contraceptive advice and reproductive options, putting their jobs at risk in the name of social justice.
The Handmaid’s Tale = = =  In the Land of Two-Legged Women by Huey Helene Alcaro (Inanna Publications)In the present day of binge-worthy television, it seems great novels are prime TV series and The Handmaid’s Tale is no exception. Like it’s bestselling dystopian predecessor, the show depicts a totalitarian society that treats women as property of the state, namely as sexual servants to repopulate a devastated world. Huey Helene Alcaro’s Atwood-encouraged novel In the Land of Two-Legged Women, in a similar dystopian vein, is set in a world where women have their right legs surgically removed at puberty to please their future husbands at the detriment of their own mobility. Central to the story is a quietly unfolding defiance that makes for a real feminist page-turner. * * *We’re sure the feminist killjoys on your list won’t protest these picks!
