Collected Collections: The Anthologized
So far this Short Story Month we’ve featured single-author short story collections; a great way to see a writer grapple with different themes and forms in their craft. As May winds to a close, we’re all about anthologies: multi-author collections that serve up a little bit of everything.
This Collected Collection: The Anthologized
Nothing Without Us Too, edited by Cait Gordon and Talia C. Johnson (Renaissance Press)A follow-up to 2020’s Nothing Without Us, a 2020 Prix Aurora Award finalist, Nothing Without Us Too is an anthology collection of works by disabled writers. The contributors’ lived experiences with disability as well as other intersections of identity – race, gender, sexuality, and class, to name a few – are effortlessly woven into these sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, always transporting stories. Contributors include Matthew Del Papa, Jen Desmarais, A. Gregory Frankson, and more. After Realism, edited by André Forget (Véhicule Press)A 2022 ALU Summer Book Club pick, our team loved reading and discussing this collection of stories by millennial authors to watch. This eye-catching cover encases 24 stories that bridge real-life anxieties and a sense of the uncanny – cats as narrators, scintillating letter exchanges, a gender non-binary D&D game… it’s all here and then some. Contributors include Jean-Marc Ah Sen, Casey Plett, Téa Mutonji, John Elizabeth Stintzi, and more. The Spirits Have Nothing to Do With Us, edited by Dan K. Woo (Wolsak & Wynn)Ken Klonsky-award winning writer Dan K. Woo edited this collection of new Chinese-Canadian fiction, which bridges stories set in China and elsewhere, touching on the fantastical, the tense, and the deeply moving. Writers both established and up-and-coming are featured, including the first work in English by writer Bingji Ye, giving readers much to discover. Contributors include Eddy Boudel Tan, Isabella Wang, Sheung-King, and more.* * *
