In Review: The Week of October 31st
If you’re getting ready for a weekend of praying to whatever shrine of Obama HOPE posters and #ImWithHer candles in advance of the coming US Election next Tuesday, take a lit break to catch up on what we got up to on All Lit Up this week, and maybe discover a book to shield your eyes with, while you’re at it.
~ Did we mention the Giller Light Bash? We’ll be heading to the Toronto edition, but there’s bashes all across Canada. Buy tickets for the one in your zone, folks!~ The Toronto Star reports on how the Moleskine notebook cream-colour paper-cutted its way into our hipster hearts at the peak of the digital age (see Lauren’s embarrassing heap of moleskines at left).~ Emma Watson has left a hundred signed copies of her feminist book club pick all over the London tube system. This is just like when she left knitted hats everywhere in the Gryffindor common room, we guess Hermiones just gonna Hermione.
What Else We’re Reading
Last weekend Tan attended CanZine at Toronto’s AGO, and scored a copy of Pac’n Heat, an anthology of noir shorts about Ms. Pac Man. This slim volume packs a ton of fun – but of course it would, with so many great contributors. If their tales of greed and ghosts have got you looking for more work to devour, check out some of the ALU selections written by Pac’n Heat contributors Gary Barwin, Bonnie Bowman, Lisa de Nikolits, Terri Favro, Kathryn Mockler, Jacqueline Valencia, and Evan Munday. On the Blog
~ It’s just not the Giller Prize without #teamALU self-manicuring the shortlisted covers onto their nails. We had a blast Friday making our digits Giller Light Bash-ready, and, ahem, *chirping* a certain person’s bird-painting attempts.~ We got our backs up about all the great books that didn’t get nominated for major prizes this year, and then found out how hard it was to narrow a list down and apologized to juries everywhere immediately.~ The team at ECW Press shared with us their 30 Day Water Challenge to keep the planet moist, inspired by their book Boiling Point by Maude Barlow (sorry for using the word moist).~ Daylight savings time is coming to an end this Sunday, and daylight is about to get a whole lot more scarce. We’ve got you covered with FREE reading lights, which you’ll get a promo code for if you sign up for our monthly newsletter anytime before November 14th. (With the purchase of a book, you need something to use the reading light on, doi).Around the Web
