Poetry in Motion: Qurat Dar + Non-Prophet

Winner of the Claire Harris Poetry Prize, Qurat Dar’s debut collectionNon-Prophet (Goose Lane Editions) considers faith, identity, and belonging. Through poems that move between the sacred and the everyday, Qurat reflects on language and what it means to feel both connected to and estranged from one’s faith.

Qurat Dar on her poetic style

I largely write first person, confessional free verse. I spent some of my formative years as a poet competing in poetry slam, which continues to influence my work (such as through emphasis on narrative and extended metaphor). These days I aim to write poetry that bridges page and stage. I pull from my lived experience and day to day as well as spirituality, nature, and science.
