Do-Lit-Yourself: Literary #notd, GILLER EDITION

November 9, 2015

All Lit Up began its #notd (nails of the day) almost as a fluke: we had a column spot to fill, and  needed something to do with our hands as the Giller 2014 longlist was announced. Instead of biting our nails, we painted them to mimic some of our fave book covers. Well, we've done it again, and our inspo this time around is none other than the 2015 Giller nominees themselves, three of five (!) being indies. Get your own nails gala-ready with our tips on tips, below.

DoLitYourself

Do-Lit-Yourself is a column for book lovers with a crafty streak. This pinteresting monthly is keyed by LPG Education and Engagement manager Lauren Perruzza.

Going in order of the Giller Prize's Shortlist Announcement, first up is Andre Alexis'  Fifteen Dogs (Coach House Books). These Greek-pottery inspired pooches are dolling up some coppery polish, here. (Do it yourself with some greyhound decals to save time).

Next up: the floral-motif'ed  Arvidaby Samuel Archibald, translated by Donald Winkler (Biblioasis). For this look, paint your first three nails on each hand blue, and the latter two purple. Rough outline the shapes of leaves and flowers in black, and then, once dry, use a white nail pen for definition.

Rachel Cusk's Outline is best served by a quick ombre blue nail, with daubs of gold, white, and black near the base, and more daubs of white to be clouds.

daydreams_nails_sm

Daydreams of Angels by Heather O'Neill gives you a few elements to work with - but like Outline, start with blue and build up from there.

martinjohn_nails_sm

Anakana Schofield's darkly-funny and seriously experimental  Martin John (Biblioasis) lends its London underground motif well to a literary manicure, we think.

We saluted the Giller Prize itself with red-tipped cream nails, and a rose accent.

And that's that! Why not get your own nails spruced up in time for the Giller Light Bash in your area?
