Chappy Hour is a monthly column, authored by Literary Press Group Sales Manager Tan Light, that pairs an excerpt from an ALU title with a cocktail recipe. Kick back, sip a literary-inspired tipple, and read something great!
Today we feature Kate Cayley's Short Story Collection
How You Were Born (Pedlar Press, 2014) and the gin, cherry, and citrus sipper, The Communist.
I recently had the opportunity to hear Kate Cayley read this story from
How You Were Born in Toronto, and it was almost as charming as the author herself, though a little on the dark side. In it, a pair of siblings spends a summer spying on their elderly neighbors, of whom they suspect a terrible past. Mix yourself a Communist cocktail, a little known gem dating back to the 1930s, and savour a glimpse of a childhood summer on a wintery afternoon.
What You’ll Need:
• 1 shot of Gin
• 0.5 shots of Cherry Brandy
• 1 shot of Orange Juice • 0.75 shots of Lemon Juice
What to Do:
Add all the ingredients to the mixer, add lots of ice, shake thoroughly and strain. Serve in a Martini glass and garnish with a cherry.
